EPA Mandated Lead Based Paint Training
Under EPA rules that went into effect on April 22, 2010, anyone performing renovation, repair and painting projects that disturb lead-based paint (as little as 6 square feet) in homes, child care facilities and schools built before 1978 must be certified and must follow specific work practices to minimize occupants’ exposure to lead hazard.
All individuals performing activities that disturb painted surfaces must be certified renovators or have been trained by a certified renovator. A certified renovator must also be assigned to each renovation and perform all of the EPA-mandated responsibilities of a certified renovator. A full certification takes 8 hours to complete and is good for five years. The refresher classes must be completed BEFORE the initial certification date + five years. (i.e., If you originally took the certification on April 10, 2010 the refresher must be completed prior to April 10, 2015.)
